The July 2024 closure wave

Before the last Beefeaters shut in September 2026, many familiar names had already disappeared from the public restaurant list. A building might still stand beside a Premier Inn, yet no longer welcome local diners. Others went to a different pub company, and some were demolished. This register brings those earlier places together without adding them to the final 106.

Whitbread announced its Accelerating Growth Plan on 30 April 2024. It planned to sell 126 lower-returning restaurants as going concerns and convert another 112 into integrated hotel restaurants. The space could provide up to 3,500 extra hotel rooms. Around 1,500 jobs were expected to go, from a UK workforce of 37,000. These figures covered Beefeater and Brewers Fayre together; there was no separate Beefeater total. The plan left 196 branded restaurants.

On 4 and 5 July, many restaurants stopped serving the public and became breakfast and evening dining rooms for hotel guests. In October 2024, Whitbread reported accepted offers for 51 sites totalling £56m. Buyers were not named then. Later reports identified the Papas Group and Heartwood among the buyers. Earlier disposals had already reshaped the estate: in 2003, 34 of 51 marketed Beefeaters were sold, leaving 160 in the chain.

Where sources give different dates, we show the broader period.

Emersons Green, Bristol

At 200–202 Westerleigh Road, BS16 7AN, the old Beefeater and today’s Wetherspoon share an address. BristolWorld reported a brief Great British Pub Co reopening in July 2025. The Papas Group franchise announcement later named Emersons Green. The address match is clear, but the full handover sequence has not been researched.

Glegg Arms, Heswall

A pub since the 1840s, the Glegg Arms on Chester Road, CH60 3SD, last served the public on 4 July 2024. It then served hotel guests. A 2026 proposal would demolish the pub and increase the hotel from 87 to 111 rooms. The reports describe opposition, including a petition with more than 400 signatures; they do not confirm approval.
