London’s final Beefeaters were the Fountain in Twickenham, London Woolwich and Travellers Rest at Kenton. The first Beefeater in Enfield had already become a Toby Carvery years earlier. A London history therefore needs both the last three and the older addresses, while keeping their dates distinct.

The Fountain and Travellers Rest were sizeable roadside pubs before their Beefeater chapters, whereas Woolwich was part of a much later hotel development. Those different beginnings explain why photographs and memories of London Beefeaters can look nothing alike. The pages below retain the local pub names, precise addresses and sources rather than presenting them as examples of one standard restaurant building.

Three local stories

The Fountain, Twickenham

Twickenham’s Fountain was a roadhouse built in 1939 at Staines Road and Sixth Cross Road. CAMRA explains the name through two circular fountains once standing outside, a detail that makes sense of the pub even after the fountains disappeared. It also dates an early-2011 refurbishment and describes the later change to dining for hotel guests. A Beefeater memory here can therefore relate to different interiors within an older building. The public restaurant’s closure and the continuation of hotel meals are kept separate, so a surviving hotel connection does not become a promise of public dining.

Travellers Rest, Kenton

Kenton’s Travellers Rest faces the station across Kenton Road. An earlier Rest Hotel appears on the 1914 Ordnance Survey map, while the present pub was rebuilt in 1933. CAMRA says it claimed at that opening to be Middlesex’s largest public house. Its later Beefeater and hotel use occupied a place already associated with travel and sizeable public rooms. The mapped earlier pub and the rebuilt building are different dates in the same site’s history. Keeping both dates explains why a familiar old pub name need not mean that the current structure has survived unchanged since the first map reference.

London Woolwich, Woolwich

London Woolwich is a newer contrast to the Fountain and Travellers Rest. Its Beefeater opened on Beresford Street in July 2017 with the 128-room Premier Inn London Woolwich Royal Arsenal. Construction had begun around 2012 but stalled before Berkeley took over and restarted the work. The final restaurant layout put the bar and dining space on opposite sides, with outdoor tables behind the building. These details place a remembered visit in the completed hotel development, rather than in an old roadhouse. The restaurant’s opening date and the longer construction story describe different stages, both useful for understanding the address.

Earlier Beefeaters in London

Enfield: Halfway House

Hayes: Millington Road and The Grapes

The two Hayes sites were at Millington Road, UB3 4AZ, and 362 Uxbridge Road, UB4 0HF. The local CAMRA account places both public closures in early July 2024. Millington Road serves the hotel above; The Grapes was also understood to have become guest-only.
