The Midlands list includes restaurants in Birmingham, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Nottinghamshire and nearby counties. New pub operators are part of the picture, especially at Griff House in Nuneaton and The Three Fish in Newport, but a name in a sale report is not the same as a confirmed opening.

Longford House in Cannock needs a separate explanation. Press lists have placed a Longford Inn there, while the Queensway sale entry concerns the different Longford Inn at Longford, Gloucester. Cannock’s Longford House should not acquire another pub’s new operator through that confusion. Its venue page keeps the address, photo and status together so readers can follow the right building.

Three local stories

George In The Tree, Balsall Common

George in the Tree has one of the Midlands’ most distinctive pub names. The Berkswell Society’s heritage trail explains it through the Hanoverian Georges and a sign hung on a large roadside elm because the inn stood back from the road. It traces an inn here to at least the eighteenth century, with livestock drovers travelling from Wales towards London before the place became a coaching stop. The later Beefeater on Kenilworth Road at Balsall Common was another chapter on that long-lived site. The heritage account describes the inn’s history; it does not precisely date every part of the much-altered building.

Griff House, Nuneaton

Griff House’s importance is inseparable from George Eliot’s childhood. The novelist, born Mary Ann Evans, lived here from infancy into early adulthood before the house became part of a later restaurant-and-hotel complex. The Nuneaton Beefeater occupied a place with a literary history quite unlike a standard new-build steakhouse. Queensway now lists Griff House at the same Coventry Road address, CV10 7PJ. Its current pub page marks the next operator, while the earlier history belongs to the house itself. A meal remembered under the Beefeater name sits within that longer sequence, rather than being the beginning of the building’s story.

Oakley Hay, Corby

Oakley Hay, at Little Colliers Field in Great Oakley on Corby’s edge, joined Beefeater in 2011. CAMRA describes a mainly food-led pub with a terrace and garden, opening early to provide breakfast for the Premier Inn next door. Its later listing says service continued for hotel guests after the public restaurant closed. That is a different outcome from the named Queensway reopenings in the Midlands: the hotel can still provide food without recreating the public Beefeater restaurant. The venue page preserves the old address and facilities while separating the historical restaurant hours from arrangements for staying guests.

Earlier Beefeaters in Midlands

Dog & Duck, Wellingborough

The London Road pub, NN8 2DP, later used the plain Beefeater name. CAMRA’s July 2024 update lists it as long-term closed, but does not provide an exact closure day.
