Yorkshire’s final five Beefeaters were the Brecks in Rotherham, Halifax at Broad Street Plaza, the Kingswood in Hull, the Lakeside in Doncaster and the Millfield at Nether Poppleton near York. The familiar chain name joined together a converted brewery pub, a town-centre leisure development and newer restaurants beside hotels, but each place has its own local background.

Yeadon Stoops near Leeds Bradford Airport belongs to an earlier closure wave. It stopped serving the public in July 2024 and continued for Premier Inn guests, so it appears separately from the final five. That distinction helps when a search result calls a building a Beefeater even though its public restaurant chapter ended before the national farewell.

Three local stories

The Brecks, Rotherham

Rotherham’s Brecks reaches back to the chain’s first year. CAMRA describes the former Brecks Hotel as a Tennant Brewery house that Whitbread took over and made a Beefeater in 1974. The later restaurant on Wickersley Road had another substantial makeover in 2015, bringing new booths and a modern bar. Its long Beefeater chapter therefore contained changes within the same brand, rather than one unaltered room lasting throughout. The old hotel name, the brewery connection and the refurbishment help place different photographs or memories within that history. The pub’s beginnings are distinct from the newer hotel developments elsewhere in Yorkshire.

The Lakeside, Doncaster

Doncaster’s Lakeside restaurant stood near Lakeside Retail Park, off White Rose Way, with Premier Inn alongside. The area had previously been the town’s airfield, opened in 1934 and used as RAF Doncaster during the war before closing in December 1992. The later lake, homes and shops explain the setting into which the restaurant fitted. A visit remembered through the lake or the retail park belongs to that redevelopment chapter. The restaurant’s own CAMRA description includes its large bar and lounge, while its venue page follows the closure separately from the older history of the surrounding land.

The Millfield, York

The Millfield’s setting was York Business Park at Nether Poppleton, on the city’s north-western edge. The council’s character appraisal describes the business park spreading over former farmland during the 1980s and 1990s, on the low-lying Ouse flood plain. Nearby Millfield Lane appears on an 1854 Ordnance Survey map, long before the modern commercial development. The restaurant’s name and location therefore lead into the changing landscape around it, rather than suggesting that the Beefeater itself was an old inn. Its page keeps that area history beside the individual restaurant address and the adjoining Premier Inn.
