One Last TableBeefeater Memories · 1974—2026
Editorial reconstruction of an empty restaurant table beside a window at dusk after closing time

The final chapter

The restaurants closed. The strategy carries on.

Beefeater ended because Whitbread chose a hotel-first model: simpler integrated dining, more Premier Inn rooms and the sale of restaurants that can continue under other operators.

All Beefeater restaurants now confirmed closed

Original editorial reconstruction · fictional unbranded restaurant · not a real Beefeater venue

In brief

The closure has four different layers.

  • Beefeater’s own website now confirms that all of its restaurants have closed.
  • Individual public service can end earlier, while Premier Inn guest dining may continue in the same building.
  • Whitbread’s financial figures cover 197 restaurants across several brands—not Beefeater alone.
  • A sale, planning approval, confirmed opening date and open successor are different evidence states.
Final service10.09.26

Whitbread announced 10 September as the final brand-wide date. Beefeater now confirms that all restaurants have closed. Individual venues may have closed or rebranded earlier, and loss of the brand does not necessarily end hospitality in the building.

Latest verified developments

One national goodbye. Several local outcomes.

These dated updates separate completed or officially scheduled changes from transactions that remain conditional. Sources are checked daily; the latest check was 23 September 2026.

Official operator listing

White Hart, Guestling

White Hart now has a live Queensway venue listing.

Queensway Inns lists White Hart at Winchelsea Road, Guestling, Hastings, TN35 4LW, matching the former Beefeater address. This brings the archive's directly matched Queensway listings to ten. The page establishes a current operator listing, but no opening date or completion of every condition in the wider property sale has been confirmed.

Confirmed closure

Beefeater · national status

Beefeater now confirms that all of its restaurants have closed.

The brand’s own homepage has changed from advance closure information to a completed-closure notice. It says all Beefeater restaurants have closed, while Premier Inn guests can still receive breakfast, evening meals and drinks at every hotel through The Social, other in-hotel spaces or neighbouring restaurants.

Confirmed opening date

Smugglers Haunt, Ferndown

The Cranborne Hundred opening moves to 29 September.

Wetherspoon’s live venue page now lists Tuesday 29 September 2026, superseding the 16 September date previously shown by the operator and reported elsewhere. The former Beefeater address and planned daily opening hours are unchanged.

A final week in practice

Bar + Block Newcastle reached its last public service.

The Newgate Street steakhouse closed to the public on Thursday 3 September 2026. The restaurant opened in December 2019 inside Newcastle’s former Co-operative department store, shortly before the pandemic disrupted hospitality trading across Britain.

ChronicleLive reported that mailing-list customers were offered 40% off qualifying main meals until 31 August, subject to a £50 minimum food spend and exclusions. Those terms come from the newspaper’s account because the underlying customer email is not public. The closure itself is confirmed by Bar + Block, which also says the associated Premier Inn continues to provide breakfast, evening meals and drinks to hotel guests after the public restaurant closed. No successor public restaurant or farewell event has been announced.

Not one sudden bad year

A twenty-five-year move from tables to rooms.

The 2026 decision is the end of a long property strategy. Across demergers, disposals and exchanges, Whitbread repeatedly concentrated on Premier Inn and on dining that supports the hotel rather than a separate destination restaurant brand.

  1. Hotel adjacency is already central

Whitbread groups 257 Beefeater and Out & Out restaurants inside a business increasingly organised around Travel Inn and the value of paired sites.

  2. A mixed pub-restaurant estate is sold

Mitchells & Butlers buys 239 sites for £497 million. The deal is not 239 Beefeaters; it advances Whitbread’s focus on restaurants connected to hotels.

  3. Restaurants are swapped for rooms

Forty-four mainly Beefeater pub-restaurants are exchanged for 21 hotels and 1,245 rooms, with both sides valued at £78 million.

  4. Conversions become a formal programme

Whitbread plans 112 restaurant-to-room conversions and 126 disposals while keeping a smaller branded estate.

  5. The branded model ends

A complete exit from 197 branded restaurants is proposed, alongside integrated hotel dining, going-concern sales and thousands of extension rooms.

Whitbread’s stated case

Revenue was substantial. Returns were not.

These figures cover 197 restaurants across Beefeater and several other Whitbread brands—not Beefeater by itself. They come from the April 2026 business review and should be read as the case for the whole programme.

£284mFY26 food-and-drink revenue
£13msite-level adjusted loss before tax
£10massociated central overheads
110sites intended for going-concern sale
£660mtotal capital investment in the wider plan
£100mincremental adjusted PBT targeted by FY31
51branded restaurants sold for £50m by FY26
60further restaurants with sale terms agreed
£1.5bnwider property recycling ambition

Whitbread targeted returns of 15–20% on the investment programme and said around 3,800 roles were affected across its 30,000-person UK and Ireland workforce, with redeployment sought where possible. Its wider programme also targets £250 million of efficiencies.

Two years to last orders

The contraction became an exit.

  1. 01

    The first restructuring

Whitbread proposes 112 restaurant conversions and 126 sales, while retaining 196 branded restaurants. Around 1,500 roles are expected to go.

  2. 02

    A complete branded exit

The business review proposes replacing all 197 remaining branded restaurants with integrated hotel dining or selling them as going concerns.

  3. 03

    Last Reward Club earning date

Trade reporting says points earning and missing-receipt claims end ahead of the club’s shutdown.

  4. 04

    Reward Club closes

Members must use points and vouchers by this date; remaining points are reported to expire at 7am on 1 September.

  5. 05

    Other restaurant brands close

Whitbread’s other named restaurant brands reach their final service dates across these two days.

  6. 06

    Beefeater closes nationwide

The brand now confirms that all Beefeater restaurants have closed, while later venue evidence shows that some public service ended or changed operator earlier.

Time-sensitive archive note

A fourteen-year relationship ends first.

Beefeater Grill launched Reward Club across 130 restaurants in April 2012. Members initially received five points for every £1 spent, with 500 points exchangeable online for vouchers, alongside monthly statements, personal offers and birthday rewards. The terms changed over time, but the launch establishes how long the scheme had been part of the brand.

The earning and missing-receipt deadline was reported as 24 August. Points and vouchers must be used by 31 August, with remaining points expiring at 7am on 1 September. Readers should confirm any personal account position directly with Beefeater because this page is an independent historical project, not customer support.

Four outcomes for the estate

Brand ending does not mean one fate.

The available evidence points to several paths. The exact outcome at many individual sites remains unsettled or unpublished.

01

Integrated dining

Breakfast and dinner continue inside Premier Inn under a simpler hotel-led offer, without a separate restaurant brand. Current venue pages now describe this explicitly for hotel guests.

02

Extension rooms

Restaurant space or adjacent land becomes additional Premier Inn bedrooms where planning and site economics allow.

03

Going-concern sale

Another operator takes the building and staff, preserving hospitality while changing the name, menu and ownership. Queensway’s conditional 53-site deal could transfer about 900 staff across five brands.

04

Other disposal

Some properties may be sold without a confirmed hospitality successor. No blanket promise applies to every address.

Why room totals differ

3,000 in April. 3,600 after consultation.

Whitbread’s April business review described 3,000 extension rooms. Later post-consultation reporting referred to 3,600. The most cautious interpretation is that the programme evolved; the figures belong to different dates rather than one of them being silently “corrected”.
